This morning’s most alarming news story is of the shooting that occurred early this morning at Chop Suey nightclub on Capitol Hill. Reports state that just before 12:30, someone entered a side door at the venue and fired shots into the hallway, killing local rap artist 29-E and seriously injuring the show’s host, 1st Black Prez. Another victim was treated at Harborview and released. Seattle Police have booked one suspect, and believe at least one more is still at large.
According to The Stranger’s Slog, one of the show’s promoters had been warned about the possibility of gang violence at the event. Gang violence has come alarmingly to the forefront of Seattle news recently, and an event like this at a popular nightclub in a trendy neighborhood – as opposed to areas such as South Seattle which seem far removed from the day to day life of many of Seattle’s pop and rock music patrons – brings the problem, quite literally, home.
If Seattle is to be Mayor Nickels’ City Of Music, then performers and fans of music need to be safe. So how do we stop the violence?
