Rock-hungry crowds packed Chop Suey Friday night, eager for a taste of the heavily-recommended Dirtbombs’ sonic magic. Openers and local darlings Thee Emergency probably didn’t hurt the door total either, but my favorite part of the evening was discovering in-betweeners Little Claw. This Portland band played raucous, distortion-heavy music that was something like surf rock, something like punk, and something very very like awesome. And lead singer Kilynn also plays a PURPLE VIOLIN. How could it not be love?

“It’s been a long time since we played a show,” lead singer Michael Jaworski said, “and we’re really excited to be here.” You could tell - The Cops gave one of the most animated sets I’ve ever seen from them, with guitarist John Randolph climbing on amps and performing balletic twirls and leaps about the stage, and Jaworksi almost rocking his own tie off. Even the space to the side of the stage was packed as everyone from the green room came out to watch. Maybe the reason behind the show - it was a benefit to raise funds for an uninsured friend’s health care - fueled the band’s fire, or maybe they’re just rejuvenated after a summer (mostly) off. Whatever the case, I hope to see The Cops - THESE Cops - much more often in the coming months.

The Cops play the Sunset Tavern on October 30th.

This edition’s theme, inspired by the late George Carlin, was “words you can’t say on television.” Several of #13’s featured bands performed, and all present had a %&#$ing good time.

The easy and intelligent sounds of Palodine and Rocky Votolato wafted - for free! - across the Seattle Center grounds on August 16. Despite the heat, crowds packed the lawn, and rarely has a better summer afternoon been had.

Despite widespread concerns about overcrowding, sound quality, and whether or not Vampire Weekend sucks (they don’t), Friday’s installment of the Capitol Hill Block Party was a pretty darned good time. My personal highlight was catching the Das Llamas‘ final show at the Cha Cha Lounge, and getting to thank them afterwards for all the fun I’ve had watching them live.
