I like Police Teeth more every time I hear them, and luckily I got to hear them last night. Yesterday was so busy that by the time I was able to head to Neumos for the Police Teeth / Akimbo / Fucked Up show I was afraid I was going miss Police Teeth’s set. Luckily, I arrived in time to catch most of it, and though the crowd was still thin so early in the evening, I hope everyone else there enjoyed it as much as I did. Rather loud, mildly spastic, and always having a good time, Police Teeth are a joy to watch, and their punk-pop-rock-garage-fuzz music transcends genres and offers fun times for everyone.

Also, their blog is really hilarious.

The Whip @ Chop Suey

The Whip, an electropop band from Manchester, England, traveled a long, long way to make Seattle dance, but last night at Chop Suey they achieved their goal. As the band worked themselves into a sweat, attendees churned on the floor below, and I watched one audience member’s tall blonde mohawk change from red to blue to red as he boogied beneath the blinking lights. Seattle, you do shake your booty sometimes after all!

I saw Wallpaper for the first time on Saturday night, and by the second song I was leaning over and whispering to my husband, “Holy shit, these guys are GOOD.” I bought their CD, and have had it on repeat for most of the past two days. Now it’s your turn to fall in love with them.

High Class Wreckage makes big, sexy music. Full of thumping bass, growly vocals, and fuzzy guitars, they seem half seventies rock, half Mudhoney, and one hundred percent – to quote their MySpace page – sweaty fucking rock and roll. Live, they give their all, rocking their hardest even to a small weeknight room, screaming, rolling on the floor, and offering levels of hair-swirling not seen since the demise of Iceage Cobra. Luckily, their concert schedule is packed – offering eight shows between now and the end of April – so you have plenty of opportunities to see this spectacle for yourself.

Hell’s Kitchen Benefit

You’ve heard of Hell’s Kitchen, Tacoma’s biggest rock club. Maybe you’ve been there. Maybe you’d like to go there again. If all works out according to plan, you’ll have the chance.

In the wake of the Great White fire several years ago. many clubs around the country have been forced to install costly new sprinkler systems to be allowed to say open. Now the city of Tacoma is commanding Hell’s Kitchen to do the same. In addition, the venue has to pay for upgrades to the water line so that it will offer enough pressure to actually operate the sprinklers.

There’s nothing wrong with patron safety, of course, but the financial demands placed by these improvements are beyond Hell’s Kitchen’s normal means. Therefore, the music community is coming together to help. Tomorrow night, March 12, seattlepunk.org is putting on a massive benefit show to help raise money for the new sprinklers. In addition to a six (!) band bill, members of the female tattoo community The Gypsy Queens will be on hand to help emcee and to pose for live photoshoots with me and two other photographers.

The cover is only five dollars, and Hell’s Kitchen is offering beer specials and free pool all night. Please think of putting aside your objections to “that other city” just for one night, and coming out to help the music scene stay strong.

School Age Crowdsurfer

This kid, who couldn’t have been more than seven or eight, went crowdsurfing at the Agent Orange show at Studio Seven last week, and appeared to have the time of his life. The audience thought he was the coolest, and passed him back and forth all over before finally sending him to the stage, where he climbed up and proudly displayed the Agent Orange t-shirt he was wearing. “You should know that I’m going to do that with our kids someday,” I warned my husband.
