I saw Wallpaper for the first time on Saturday night, and by the second song I was leaning over and whispering to my husband, “Holy shit, these guys are GOOD.” I bought their CD, and have had it on repeat for most of the past two days. Now it’s your turn to fall in love with them.

Video Monday: Mississippi Squirrel Revival

When I was a kid, I loved sitting in my grandmother’s den, listening to records and eight-tracks on her stereo. Her collection was eclectic, ranging from gospel and country to old Cream albums my dad and uncle and left behind when they moved away. The song I remember best, though, was a comedy piece, Ray Stevens’ “Mississippi Squirrel Revival.” It never failed to delight and amuse me, especially when my grandmother would sing and laugh along.

My grandmother passed away the week before last, and so I’d like to post this video in the memory of her, and of the happiness and laughter that always surrounded her.

I have no idea what happened to Incubus, but I’m hoping it involved their lead singer posing for lots and lots of nude photos and posting them on the internet. Before I go to Google to find out if my wish came true, here’s your video for the week: apparently this is at least some part of Incubus, performing an amusing rap about Chanukah and various other things Jewish. Happy Chanukah, everyone!

Anyhow, I had never heard of this song before, but it amused me, and it seems appropriate. So away we go….

Video Monday: I Don’t Like Mondays

If I had to make a list of The Saddest Songs On Earth, Boomtown Rats’ “I Don’t Like Mondays” would definitely be in my top three. It draws you in with its beautiful lullaby melody, and then suddenly you realize the absolute horror of what it’s about. Nonetheless, you can’t help but sing along.

While browsing YouTube* for a video of the song, I also came across a Tori Amos cover version. Amos’ voice can make any song haunting, and while “I Don’t Like Mondays” needs no help there, Amos’ version adds some lovely nuance to the song by replacing a bit of the bombast with quieter, more subtle refrains.
